Recommended RSS Software

We use and recommend the following RSS software and provide instructions on how to use it with Voppie's RSS feeds.

For Mac OS X

NewsMac (from ThinkMac Software) comes in both free and professional versions.

For Windows

Awasu comes in both free and professional versions, and includes a built in web browser.

Awasu Instructions

  1. From this page http://www. voppiecomputers.com/RSS/ RIGHT CLICK on the desired RSS feed and select COPY LINK LOCATION
Then, in Awasu:
  1. Select NEW CHANNEL from the FILE menu
  2. You'll notice in the NEW CHANNEL screen that the Feed URL you copied in 1 above is already pasted into the box on the screen. Click NEXT.
  3. Awasu checks the feed and displays information about the feed on the next screen. Click NEXT.
  4. On this screen, you'll see that "Automatically update this channel" is TICKED. If you want to, you can select an option form the right of screen to "do something" to tell you when the channel is updated. Click NEXT.
  5. The next screen contains settings to Archive the Feed content for searching. Just click NEXT.
  6. Finally, click FINISH to add the channel.
In the CONTROL CENTER on the left of screen, you'll see the new channel you just added. Click ONCE on the channel name to display (on the right hand side) :
  • at top of screen a summary of all items in the channel (the ITEM PANE), and
  • under that, the entire list of items in the channel will show in the BROWSER PANE
Clicking on an item name (in either the item pane or browser window) will open the web page for that entry in the BROWSER PANE. This behaves much like a normal web browser...

NewsMac Instructions

  1. On this page http://www.voppiecomputers.com/RSS/ RIGHT CLICK on the desired RSS feed and select COPY LINK LOCATION
Then, in NewsMac:
  1. Select NEW from the CHANNEL menu
  2. PASTE the URL into the RSS Feed URL box at top of screen, and click VERIFY
  3. NewsMac checks the feed and displays information about the feed below. From the pop up menu's provided, choose which SECTION and CATEGORY you want to store the feed. Then click ADD CHANNEL to finish the process.
In the SECTION pane (top left of screen) select the SECTION you saved the feed into. Now, select the CATEGORY in the middle top pane. You should see your new feed in the right hand top pane.

Click on your feed, and then click on the FAVOURITE icon in the main toolbar (top of screen) to store your feed on the favourites toolbar and in your "Favorite Channels" folder - accessible form VIEW menu, FAVORITE CHANNELS option.

Also, when you click on your feed, it will display (bottom half of screen)
  • at left of screen a summary of all items in the channel, whcih when you click on an item it will show
  • at right, the detail for each item in the feed.
Clicking on an item name (in the detail window on bottom RHS ) will open the web page for that entry in your default web browser.
